November is here, and across Pakistan the mornings are turning cold. Gas heaters come out in Lahore and Islamabad, quilts come down from the top shelf, and everyone wants a long hot bath. Your hair and skin feel the change quickly: a dry, itchy scalp, frizzy ends, rough hands and cracked lips. These winter hair care tips will help you keep both hair and skin comfortable all season.
None of this needs an expensive salon. A few small changes to how you wash, oil and moisturise make a real difference, and most of them cost nothing at all.
Why winter is hard on hair and skin
Cold air holds less moisture, and heaters dry indoor air even more. Hair and skin lose water faster, so they feel tight and rough. In Punjab, smog adds dust and grime that makes people want to wash more often.
Then there is the biggest winter habit of all: very hot water. It feels wonderful, but it strips the natural oils from your scalp and skin. That is why dandruff-like flakes and itchy shins often appear in December.
Winter hair care tips that actually work
1. Turn the water down
Wash your hair with lukewarm water, not steaming hot. If you love a hot bath, keep your head out of it for most of the time and rinse hair at the end with cooler water.
2. Wash a little less often
Most people sweat less in winter. Two or three washes a week is usually enough. Choose a gentle shampoo, such as our Shampoo for Dry & Damaged Hair, which is made with olive oil and is sulfate-free.
3. Never skip conditioner
Shampoo cleans but leaves hair rough. A conditioner such as Doctor Herbal Hair Conditioner smooths the lengths so they comb easily and break less. Apply from the middle of the hair to the ends, wait 2 to 3 minutes, and rinse. Our hair conditioner guide covers the details.
4. Do not go out with wet hair
Wet hair in cold wind becomes brittle and tangles more. Pat it dry with a soft cotton towel or an old t-shirt instead of rubbing, and keep the hair dryer on a cool or warm setting.
5. Cover up, gently
Shawls, caps and hijabs protect hair from wind and smog. Wool can cause friction, so a soft cotton or silk-feel layer underneath helps reduce frizz.
A winter oiling routine with pure oils
Champi is one of the best things we inherited from our mothers, and winter is the season it shines. Here is a simple weekly plan using our 30ml oils.
- Scalp oiling (once or twice a week): warm a little Pure Black Seed Oil (Kalonji Oil) between your palms and massage it into the scalp an hour before washing. Kalonji has been used for hair in our homes for generations. Read more in our kalonji oil benefits guide.
- Dry ends (after every wash): two or three drops of Pure Argan Oil on towel-dried ends for softness and shine.
- Thick, rough hair (weekly): Pure Castor Oil (Arandi ka Tel) is very thick, so mix a few drops into a lighter oil like argan or coconut and apply to the lengths before washing.
- Scalp massage boost: many people add 2 to 3 drops of Pure Rosemary Oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil (coconut, olive, argan or jojoba). Never put rosemary oil on the scalp undiluted.
If you prefer a ready-made traditional blend, our Hair Oil for Hair Fall & Growth mixes 13 oils including mustard, kalonji, almond and coconut. You can browse all hair oils in the Hair Oils collection.
Winter skin care: keep moisture in
The same rules apply to skin. Shorter, warm (not hot) baths, then moisturise within a few minutes while skin is still slightly damp. This locks water in instead of letting it escape into dry air.
- Lips and cuticles: a drop of Vitamin E Oil at night keeps them soft.
- Elbows, knees and heels: massage in vitamin E or argan oil after bathing, and wear socks at night for heels.
- Hands: washing for wudu five times a day dries hands quickly. Keep a small bottle of oil or cream near the wash area.
- Drink water: we feel less thirsty in winter but still need water. Warm water, soups and chai all count.

Safety first
All these oils are for external use on hair and skin, not for drinking. Patch test any new oil on your inner arm and wait a day. Strong essential oils like rosemary must always be diluted in a carrier oil, kept away from the eyes, and kept out of children’s reach. If a dry, flaky scalp becomes very itchy, red or painful, see a dermatologist. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, on medication, or have a health condition.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I oil my hair in winter?
Once or twice a week before washing is enough for most people. Add a few drops of argan on the ends after each wash if they feel dry.
Is it bad to wash hair with hot water in winter?
Very hot water dries the scalp and hair. Lukewarm water is better, with a cooler final rinse.
Why does my scalp flake more in winter?
Dry air and hot water can leave the scalp dry and flaky. Gentle shampoo, less hot water and regular oiling often help. If flakes are heavy, oily or itchy, see a dermatologist. Our tea tree oil guide also explains how people use it, diluted, for dandruff.
Can I use vitamin E oil on my face?
Many people use a drop on dry patches. It is thick, so it may feel heavy on oily skin. Patch test first.
Should I leave oil in my hair overnight?
You can with carrier oils like kalonji, argan or castor, as long as you wash it out the next day. Do not leave undiluted essential oils like rosemary on the scalp.
