If you have spent any time on Instagram or TikTok lately, you have seen it: people rubbing rosemary oil for hair growth into their scalp and sharing their “before and after”. In Pakistan too, rosemary has quietly joined sarson, kalonji and coconut on the list of oils people trust for their hair.
But rosemary is a strong essential oil, and using it straight from the bottle is a common mistake. This guide shows you how to mix it, how often to use it, how to massage it in, and what you can realistically expect.
Why rosemary oil is so popular for hair
Rosemary is a herb that has been used in hair and skin care in many cultures for a long time. Many people like it because it has a fresh, herbal smell, it feels refreshing on the scalp, and it fits easily into the weekly champi (oil massage) that so many Pakistani families already do.
Some small studies have looked at rosemary oil on the scalp, which is part of why it became so talked about. The honest summary: it may help support a healthy-feeling scalp as part of a regular routine, but it is not a magic fix, and results differ from person to person.
Our Pure Rosemary Oil 30ml comes in an amber glass dropper bottle under the She’s Collection label. Its label line is “Best Antiseptic Skin Tonic”, and it sits in our Hair Oils collection.
Always mix rosemary with a carrier oil
Rosemary oil is concentrated. Put directly on the scalp, it can sting, cause redness or make an itchy scalp worse. So you always mix a few drops into a gentler “carrier” oil first. These three work well:
Castor oil: thick and rich
Castor oil (arandi ka tel) is very thick, so it stays where you put it and feels rich on the roots. Because it is heavy, many people mix it half-and-half with a lighter oil so it washes out more easily.
Argan oil: soft and shiny
Argan oil is lighter and its label speaks of “Nourishment for Soft, Strong & Shiny Hair”. It suits dry, frizzy hair and is pleasant to leave on the lengths.
Jojoba oil: light and easy
Jojoba oil is light and not greasy, which makes it a good base if your scalp gets oily quickly in Karachi or Lahore humidity. Coconut, olive or sarson oil from your kitchen also work as carriers.

- Basic mix: 1 tablespoon carrier oil + 4–5 drops rosemary oil.
- Thick-hair mix: 1 teaspoon castor + 2 teaspoons argan or jojoba + 4–5 drops rosemary.
- Light mix for oily scalp: 1 tablespoon jojoba + 3 drops rosemary.
Mix fresh in a small bowl each time, or prepare a small batch in a clean glass bottle for one week. Shake before use.
A simple weekly routine
Consistency matters more than quantity. Using more drops will not give faster results, it only raises the chance of irritation.
- How often: 2–3 times a week is plenty for most people.
- When: in the evening, or 1–2 hours before your hair wash.
- How long to leave it: from one hour up to overnight. If your scalp feels itchy or warm, wash it out sooner.
- Wash out: with a mild shampoo such as our Sulfate-Free Shampoo with amla, reetha and shikakai. Shampoo twice if castor oil feels heavy.
- Finish: a conditioner like the Doctor Herbal Hair Conditioner on the lengths keeps hair soft and easier to comb.
How to do a proper scalp massage
A good massage is half the benefit, and it feels wonderful after a long day.
- Part your hair into sections so the oil reaches the scalp, not just the hair.
- Use a dropper or your fingertips to put small dots of the mix along each parting.
- Massage with the pads of your fingers (not nails) in small circles for 5–10 minutes.
- Work from the front hairline to the crown, then down to the back of the neck.
- Put any leftover oil on the ends, then tie hair loosely or cover with an old scarf.
What to expect, honestly
Hair grows slowly, and any routine needs at least two to three months before you can judge it. Many people notice their hair feels softer and their scalp feels fresher sooner than that. Thicker-looking hair, if it comes, takes longer.
Rosemary oil is not a medicine. Hair fall can be linked to stress, diet, hormones, thyroid, iron levels, new mothers’ postpartum shedding and more. If you are losing a lot of hair suddenly, or see bald patches, please see a doctor or dermatologist. For a comparison of onion products for hair fall, read Onion Shampoo vs Onion Oil. Our Onion Hair Oil can also be part of the same weekly routine.
Safety tips for rosemary oil
- Never use rosemary oil undiluted. Always mix it into a carrier oil first.
- Do a patch test: put the mix on your inner arm and wait 24 hours.
- Keep it away from your eyes. If it drips into an eye, rinse with plenty of clean water.
- It is for external use only. Do not swallow it, and keep the bottle away from children.
- Stop using it if you feel burning, rash or more itching.
Please consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have epilepsy or high blood pressure, are on medication, have a health condition, or want to use it on a child.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply rosemary oil directly to my scalp?
No. Rosemary oil is a strong essential oil. Mix about 4–5 drops into a tablespoon of a carrier oil such as castor, argan, jojoba or coconut before you apply it.
How long does rosemary oil take to show results?
Give it at least two to three months of regular use. Many people feel a softer, fresher scalp sooner, but hair growth itself is slow and results differ from person to person.
Can I leave rosemary oil in my hair overnight?
Yes, if it is properly diluted and your scalp feels comfortable. If you feel itching or warmth, wash it out sooner and use fewer drops next time.
Can I add rosemary oil to my shampoo?
You can add 1–2 drops to a single portion of shampoo in your palm. Do not pour drops into the whole bottle, and keep the lather away from your eyes.
Is rosemary oil good with castor oil?
Many people like this mix. Castor is thick, so mix it with a lighter oil like argan or jojoba and add a few drops of rosemary for an easy weekly scalp massage.
