White flakes on a black kameez, an itchy scalp in the middle of a meeting, a pimple the night before a wedding: these are problems almost everyone in Pakistan knows. That is why so many people search for tea tree oil for dandruff and for pimple-prone skin. It is one of the most popular essential oils in the world for scalp and skin care.

But tea tree oil is strong, and using it straight from the bottle often makes things worse. This guide shows you how to dilute it in your shampoo or a carrier oil, how to use it on spots, and the safety rules that matter most.

Why people use tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is made from the leaves of the tea tree plant and has a sharp, fresh, medicinal smell. It is widely used in shampoos, face washes and spot gels because many people find it helps a flaky scalp feel cleaner and helps keep oily, pimple-prone skin looking clearer.

Our Pure Tea Tree Oil 30ml has the label line “Natural Antiseptic & Skin Purifier” and comes in an amber glass dropper bottle, so you can measure drop by drop. It is a support for your routine, not a medicine. Results differ from person to person.

How to use tea tree oil for dandruff

Dandruff often gets worse in Pakistan’s winter, with hot showers and dry air, and in sticky summers when the scalp gets oily. There are two simple ways to use tea tree oil.

Method 1: a few drops in your shampoo

  • Pour one normal portion of shampoo into your palm.
  • Add 1–2 drops of tea tree oil and mix with a finger.
  • Massage into a wet scalp for 2–3 minutes, then rinse well.
  • Use this 2–3 times a week, not every day.

Do not pour tea tree oil into the whole shampoo bottle, as you cannot control how strong it becomes. A mild base works best, such as our Sulfate-Free Shampoo with amla, reetha and shikakai, or the Chemical-Free 3-in-1 Shampoo. Keep the lather away from your eyes.

Method 2: a pre-wash scalp oil

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil with 3–4 drops of tea tree oil. Jojoba oil is a good light choice; coconut or olive oil also work.
  • Apply to the scalp in sections and massage gently with your fingertips.
  • Leave it for 30–60 minutes, then wash with a mild shampoo.
  • Once or twice a week is enough.

Heavy, sticky oils left on for a long time can sometimes make flakes worse for oily scalps, so keep the mix light and do not leave it overnight at first. You can find more scalp-friendly oils in our Hair Oils collection.

How to use tea tree oil on pimples

For skin, the golden rule is: tea tree oil never goes on the face undiluted. Even a single strong drop can leave a red, dry or burning patch.

  • Wash your face and pat it dry.
  • In a small clean bowl or the cap of a bottle, mix 1 drop of tea tree oil with about a teaspoon of a light carrier oil like jojoba or grapeseed oil.
  • Dip a clean cotton bud in the mix and dab it only on the pimple, not the whole face.
  • Use it once a day, at night. Do not use it on broken or open skin.
  • Do not squeeze pimples; it can leave marks.

For daily cleansing, our Acne Soap for Pimples & Oily Skin uses a 6-in-1 formula made to deep-cleanse pores and control excess oil, and it suits daily use. Wash with the soap, pat dry, then dab your diluted tea tree mix on spots at night.

Safety rules for tea tree oil

  • Always dilute. Never put tea tree oil directly on skin, scalp or face.
  • Patch test first: put your diluted mix on the inner arm and wait 24 hours.
  • Keep it away from eyes, the inside of the nose and lips. If it gets in an eye, rinse with plenty of clean water.
  • Never swallow it. Tea tree oil can be harmful if swallowed. Keep the bottle closed and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Stop if you feel burning, see redness or your skin peels.
  • Do not combine it with strong acne creams or peels unless your doctor says so.

Dandruff that does not improve, a very itchy or painful scalp, or severe acne with deep, painful bumps should be checked by a dermatologist. Please consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication, have a health condition, or want to use it on a child.

Frequently asked questions

How many drops of tea tree oil should I add to shampoo?

Add 1–2 drops to one portion of shampoo in your palm, not to the whole bottle. Use it 2–3 times a week.

Can I put tea tree oil directly on a pimple?

No. Mix 1 drop with about a teaspoon of a light carrier oil such as jojoba, then dab only on the pimple with a clean cotton bud.

Can I leave tea tree oil in my hair overnight?

Start with 30–60 minutes and see how your scalp feels. If there is no irritation after a few weeks, some people leave a well-diluted mix on longer, but stop at any sign of burning or itching.

Is tea tree oil safe for children?

Do not use it on children without asking a doctor first, and always keep the bottle out of their reach. It must never be swallowed.

How long until I see a difference in dandruff?

Give a regular routine two to four weeks. If flakes stay the same or get worse, see a dermatologist.
