Many of us in Pakistan grew up with a simple routine: oil on Friday, shampoo, and that is it. Conditioner felt like an extra, something from TV adverts. But once you understand the real hair conditioner benefits, it becomes clear why your hair still feels rough and tangled even after a “good” shampoo.
In this guide we explain what conditioner actually does, how to use it the right way, the mistakes most people make, and how to pick the right shampoo and conditioner pair for your hair type.
Why use conditioner after shampoo?
Shampoo has one job: to clean. It lifts away oil, dust, sweat and product build-up from the scalp. The problem is that while it cleans, it also leaves the outer layer of each hair strand a little open and rough. That is why freshly washed hair can feel dry, squeaky and hard to comb.
Conditioner does the second half of the job. It coats and smooths the hair surface, so strands slide past each other instead of catching. Washing is only half the routine; conditioning finishes it.
Hair conditioner benefits you will notice
- Easier combing: fewer knots means less pulling and less breakage while you comb wet hair.
- Softer feel: rough, dry and frizzy hair feels smoother to touch.
- Natural shine: a smoother surface reflects light better, so hair looks healthier.
- Less hair fall from breakage: a lot of the hair we find in the comb is snapped hair, not hair from the root. Keeping hair smooth and untangled helps reduce that kind of breakage.
- Protection from daily stress: sun, dust, hard water, dupatta friction and heat tools are all easier on conditioned hair.
To be clear, conditioner works on the lengths of your hair. It does not change how hair grows from the scalp. If you have sudden or heavy hair fall, please see a doctor or dermatologist, because the cause may be health related.
How to use hair conditioner, step by step
- Shampoo first: wash the scalp and rinse well.
- Squeeze out water: press out extra water with your hands so the conditioner is not diluted.
- Apply from mid-length to ends: take a coin-sized amount (more for long hair) and work it from the middle of the hair down to the tips.
- Detangle gently: run a wide-tooth comb or your fingers through while it is on.
- Wait 2 to 3 minutes: let it work while you finish your bath.
- Rinse well: finish with lukewarm or cool water and rinse until hair feels smooth, not slippery.
This is exactly how we suggest using Doctor Herbal Hair Conditioner: after every shampoo, middle to ends, two to three minutes, then rinse. It is a herbal conditioner made to soften rough, dry hair, add shine and make hair easy to comb after each wash.
Common conditioner mistakes
Putting it on the scalp
The scalp already makes its own oil. Conditioner on the roots can make hair flat and greasy by evening. Keep it on the lengths.
Not rinsing properly
Leftover conditioner attracts dust and makes hair heavy. Rinse thoroughly, especially behind the ears and at the nape.
Using very hot water
Hot water dries hair and scalp, which is a bigger problem in winter. Lukewarm water for washing and a cooler final rinse is kinder to hair.
Skipping it because you oil your hair
Oiling and conditioning do different things. Oil before washing nourishes; conditioner after washing smooths what shampoo has opened. They work well together.

Your conditioner works best with a shampoo that suits your hair. Here is a simple guide from our shampoo collection.

Argan oil as a leave-in alternative
Some people prefer something they do not rinse out, especially for very dry or frizzy ends. In that case, two or three drops of Pure Argan Oil smoothed onto towel-dried ends works as a simple leave-in. Its label promises nourishment for soft, strong and shiny hair.
For best results, use both: rinse-out conditioner in the shower, then a few drops of argan on the ends. Not sure whether argan or jojoba suits you? Read argan oil vs jojoba oil. Patch test any new product first, and stop if you notice itching or redness. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication, or have a health condition.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use conditioner every time I shampoo?
Yes, for most people. Doctor Herbal Hair Conditioner is meant for use after every shampoo. If your hair is very fine and oily, use a smaller amount on the ends only.
Can men use hair conditioner?
Of course. Short hair also gets dry and rough. A small amount after shampoo keeps it soft and easier to style, and some men also use a little on the beard.
Does conditioner stop hair fall?
No product can promise that. Conditioner helps reduce hair fall caused by breakage and tangles, because smooth hair snaps less. Hair fall from the root has other causes, so see a doctor if it is heavy.
Do I need conditioner with a 3-in-1 shampoo?
Our Chemical-Free 3-in-1 Shampoo cleans and conditions in one step, so it is fine alone on busy days. Long or very dry hair may still enjoy a separate conditioner.
Can I oil my hair and use conditioner on the same day?
Yes. Oil before washing, shampoo, then condition the lengths. This is one of the best routines for dry winter hair.
