In many Pakistani homes, kalonji is everywhere: sprinkled on naan, added to achaar, and rubbed into the hair by an elder who believes in it completely. Using kalonji oil for hair is one of those family habits that has passed from nani to ammi to daughter, and today more people are looking for a pure bottle of their own.
This guide explains why black seed oil is so loved, how to use it for hair oiling and skin care, which oils to mix it with, and what to keep in mind for safety.
Black seed in Pakistani homes and in Islamic tradition
Kalonji (black seed, also called Nigella sativa) is small, black and slightly bitter. It is part of desi cooking and of traditional home remedies across South Asia and the Middle East.
For Muslims, black seed is also well known in Islamic tradition. In a hadith reported in Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Use this black seed, for it contains shifa (healing) for every disease except death.” This is why many families keep kalonji at home with respect. It is a religious tradition, and it does not mean any particular oil or product is a medicine. For health problems, always see a doctor.
Our Pure Black Seed Oil (Kalonji Oil) 30ml has the label line “Supports Immunity & Healthy Skin”. This 30 ml dropper bottle is meant for external use on hair and skin, so please do not drink it.
How to use kalonji oil for hair
Kalonji oil has a strong, earthy smell and a medium texture. Many people like it for weekly hair oiling because it makes the scalp feel nourished and the hair look healthier and shinier.
Simple weekly champi
- Warm a little oil by standing the bottle in a cup of warm water for a few minutes. Never microwave it.
- Part your hair and apply small amounts to the scalp with the dropper.
- Massage gently with your fingertips for 5–10 minutes.
- Leave it on for one to two hours, or overnight if your scalp is comfortable.
- Wash with a mild shampoo such as our Sulfate-Free Shampoo with amla, reetha and shikakai.
Twice a week is enough for most hair types. For a full hair fall routine, our article on onion shampoo vs onion oil explains how oil and shampoo work together.
Easy kalonji hair mixes
- Kalonji + castor: 1 tablespoon kalonji oil + 1 teaspoon castor oil for a richer feel on thin, dry hair.
- Kalonji + argan: equal parts with argan oil for frizzy hair; argan also softens the strong smell.
- Kalonji + rosemary: 1 tablespoon kalonji oil + 3–4 drops of rosemary oil for a fresh scalp massage. Rosemary is a strong essential oil, so never add more than a few drops. Read our rosemary oil guide first.
- Kalonji + coconut: a kitchen favourite. Coconut oil makes the mix lighter and easier to wash out.
Prefer a ready-made blend? Our Hair Oil for Hair Fall & Growth already combines 13 oils, including kalonji, mustard, almond, onion and coconut.
How to use kalonji oil for skin
Because kalonji oil is a carrier-type oil, you can use it directly on skin in small amounts after a patch test. Many people like it for:
- Dry patches: a few drops on elbows, knees and heels at night, especially in winter.
- Body massage: mixed with a lighter oil after a bath, while the skin is still slightly damp.
- Hands and cuticles: one drop rubbed into the nails before bed.
On the face, start small. Kalonji oil can feel rich for oily skin in Pakistan’s humid summers, so try one or two drops mixed with a lighter oil, and test on your jawline first. The smell is strong; a drop of argan oil in the mix makes it softer.
