On a cold winter evening, few things feel as special as a cup of zafran chai. Its golden colour and gentle aroma turn an ordinary tea break into something you want to share with family. If you have been looking for a simple saffron tea recipe, this guide gives you three easy versions you can make at home in a few minutes.

You will learn how many saffron threads to use, how to get the best colour and flavour, and how to store saffron so it stays fresh. We also cover zafrani doodh (saffron milk) and a kahwa-style green tea for guests.

How many saffron threads should you use?

Saffron is strong, so a little goes a long way. Using too much does not make the tea better; it can make it taste bitter or medicinal.

  • One cup: about 4 to 5 threads, a small pinch.
  • A family pot of 4 cups: about 15 to 20 threads.
  • For guests or a special occasion: you can add a few more threads for a deeper colour, but taste as you go.

The secret step: bloom your saffron first

Before you start any recipe, lightly crush the threads between your fingers and soak them in two tablespoons of warm (not boiling) water or milk for 10 to 15 minutes. This “blooming” releases the colour and aroma. Add this golden liquid, threads and all, near the end of cooking so the flavour stays fresh.

Recipe 1: Pakistani zafran doodh patti chai

This is the everyday favourite: a strong, milky chai with a saffron twist. It serves two.

  • 1 cup water and 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons black tea leaves (patti)
  • 2 green cardamoms (elaichi), lightly crushed
  • 8 to 10 saffron threads, bloomed in warm water
  • Sugar or honey to taste

Boil the water with the cardamom for two minutes. Add the tea leaves and let them brew until the colour is deep. Pour in the milk and bring it to a gentle boil, letting it rise and settle two or three times for a creamy chai. Lower the heat, stir in the bloomed saffron, simmer for one more minute and strain. If you use honey instead of sugar, add it once the chai is slightly cooler.

Recipe 2: Kahwa-style saffron green tea

Inspired by Kashmiri kahwa, this light, milk-free tea is lovely after a heavy dinner or when guests arrive in winter. It serves two.

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon green tea leaves
  • 1 small piece of cinnamon (darchini) and 2 green cardamoms
  • 8 to 10 saffron threads
  • A few sliced almonds, and honey to taste

Simmer the cinnamon and cardamom in water for five minutes. Turn off the heat, add the green tea and saffron, cover and let it steep for two to three minutes; green tea turns bitter if boiled. Strain into cups, top with almonds and sweeten with a spoon of honey.

Recipe 3: Zafrani doodh (saffron milk)

A warm glass of saffron milk is a bedtime tradition in many Pakistani homes. Warm one glass of milk with one crushed cardamom. Stir in 4 to 5 bloomed saffron threads, a few crushed almonds or pistachios, and let it sit for a minute so the colour spreads. Sweeten with honey once it is warm rather than boiling hot.

Summer twist: saffron chia milk

For hot days, let your saffron milk cool, stir in about two tablespoons of chia seeds per glass, and keep it in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. The seeds swell into a soft, pudding-like texture. Top with chopped nuts for a refreshing sehri or breakfast. Our Chia Seeds 200g are ideal for smoothies, salads and desserts like this.

How to store saffron so it stays fresh

  • Keep it airtight. Store threads in a small, tightly closed glass jar or their original sealed pack.
  • Keep it dark and cool. Light and heat fade colour and aroma, so use a cupboard away from the stove and sunny windows.
  • Keep it dry. Always use dry fingers or a dry spoon. Moisture is saffron’s biggest enemy in humid cities like Karachi.
  • Use whole threads. Threads keep their aroma longer than ground saffron, so crush only what you need.

A gentle word on health

Saffron has been part of traditional cooking and home remedies in our region for centuries, and many people enjoy a warm cup of saffron tea to relax at the end of the day. Honey is traditionally loved as a natural sweetener. Enjoy them as part of a balanced diet, in normal kitchen amounts.

Do not give honey to babies under one year old. Large amounts of saffron are not advised during pregnancy, so pregnant women should ask their doctor first. In general, please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, diabetic, on medication, or have a health condition.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest saffron tea recipe?

Bloom 4 to 5 saffron threads in a little warm water, make your normal doodh patti chai, and stir in the saffron liquid for the last minute of cooking.

How many saffron threads go in one cup of tea?

About 4 to 5 threads are enough for one cup. For a pot of four cups, use around 15 to 20 threads.

Should I boil saffron in tea?

It is better to soak saffron in warm liquid first and add it near the end. Long, hard boiling can dull its aroma.

Can I add honey to hot saffron tea?

Yes, but let the tea cool slightly first. Many people prefer to add honey to warm rather than boiling tea to keep its natural taste.

How long does saffron stay fresh?

Stored airtight in a cool, dark and dry place, saffron threads keep their colour and aroma for a long time. If the aroma becomes weak, the saffron is past its best.
